The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
WINTLE, 2/Lieutenant George Howard ... ... ... ... 4/Gloucester
LA VACQUERIE, 2nd December, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
When he had been wounded, knowing that only a few officers survived, he returned, after having his wound dressed, with a number of men who had lost their way. With these men he reinforced the battalion, got into touch with the battalion on his left, and helped to take up a new position under the most difficult conditions.
